What's New in Hermosa Beach on Pier Avenue This Summer

The stretch of Pier Avenue between Hermosa Avenue and the sand has always been the loudest block in the South Bay. What's changed this summer is what the noise is about. Three restaurant openings have landed or are landing inside a two-month window, a Hermosa kitchen just picked up a Michelin nod, and the city calendar for August is stacked from the north volleyball courts to the south side of the pier.

If you live here, you already know the strip. The thesis of this post is smaller and more specific: August 2026 is the month Pier Avenue crosses from "bar plaza with a few good restaurants" to a dining corridor that will pull people down PCH for the food itself. Here is what to eat, when to show up, and how to work around the crowd.

Three doors, one block, one month

Start at the pier and walk east. The first new door on your right is Tiki Kai at 73 Pier Ave, a tiki concept from the hospitality team behind The Hula Hula Room, Eat at Joe's, Paddy O'Brien's Irish Pub and The Bounty Room. It is the most theatrical opening the block has seen in years. A 14-foot tiki mask door hand-carved by Peter Asmar of Asmar Studios fronts an island-inspired interior by Davis Ink, and the room opens at 4 p.m. daily, closing at 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, midnight Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m. Sunday, with lunch and brunch service to follow.

Keep walking. In the former Playa Hermosa Fish & Oyster Co. space, Kasamar is scheduled to open. Co-founder Stephanie De Los Santos has said the project is targeting an August 2026 debut, with a coastal focus on approachable seafood and drinks in a relaxed tavern setting. Coastal-tavern is a real category shift for this address. Playa Hermosa was a straight-ahead oyster house. Kasamar reads as something you can post up at on a Tuesday.

The third door is further along in the pipeline. The former Slay Hermosa location is being lined up for Sushi Bar, an omakase concept known for tightly curated tasting menus built around premium seasonal seafood. Omakase on Pier Avenue is a new species. The block has had sushi before. It has not had a chef's-counter, reservation-only, one-seating experience.

Three openings in a single quarter, all within a two-block walk. That is not a coincidence. That is a landlord and operator class making a bet.

The Michelin signal

If you want proof the bet is being placed by people who know what they are doing, look one street over. Vin Folk in Hermosa Beach earned a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Michelin Guide USA, the guide's designation for good cooking at a fair price. Chefs Kevin De Los Santos and Katya Shastova run a menu of shareable, globally minded dishes, including a mussels tart with flaky pastry and seafood in fennel cream, and chili crab served with warm risotto.

Vin Folk is not alone. Within a few blocks you have RYLA at 1220 Hermosa Ave from chefs Ray Hayashi and Cynthia Hetlinger, a contemporary Japanese-influenced menu that has been a Hermosa fixture. AttaGirl at 1238 Hermosa Ave runs a coastal Mediterranean menu with wood-grilled skewers and handmade pastas. Baran's 2239, tucked into a nearby center with executive chef Tyler Gugliotta, still holds the "hidden by the beach" slot with over 100 wines by the bottle.

Read the pattern: chef-owner rooms, coastal-Mediterranean and Asian-influenced menus, price points that assume a repeat local audience rather than a one-and-done beach tourist. Pier Avenue is being built to hold that crowd now, not the drink-special crowd that defined it fifteen years ago.

That quote is the whole thesis of the block right now. Operators are underwriting these rooms on regulars, not on weekend spillover.

What is on the sand in August

The dining shift is the story you have to walk the block to see. The event calendar is the story you already feel every time you try to park south of 8th.

Here is the compressed schedule for the rest of the month, pulled from the city's tentative special-events calendar and the event organizers.

The volleyball tournament is the biggest footprint. The city's tentative 2026 calendar has the Hermosa Beach Open running on the north volleyball courts across the second weekend of August, with the Hermosa Beach Concert Series and Movies at the Beach staged south of the pier during the same window. Set-up begins earlier in the week, so if you live between 8th Street and the north end, expect trucks and staging by Friday.

The Hermosa Beach Triathlon lands Sunday, August 9, with a quarter-mile ocean swim, a 10-mile bike along the coast, and a 3-mile run along the shoreline. Presented by Libertana, it starts and finishes at 1 Pier Ave. If you are trying to grab breakfast that morning anywhere near the pier, plan to walk in.

Two things worth noting about the concert series. The stages sit on the beach or on the south side of the pier, and if you arrive early you can usually park for free and set up with a chair and a blanket. The trade-off is that the closest surface streets fill by early afternoon on show days, so bike or walk if you can.

The current-resident playbook for the next four weeks

A few things a five-year local already knows and a new arrival is about to learn the hard way.

• Reserve, do not walk in. With Tiki Kai open, Kasamar landing, and Vin Folk sitting on a fresh Michelin credential, the Friday and Saturday walk-in window on Pier Avenue is closing. Book the room you want by Wednesday.
• Ride the Strand, park inland. The Strand is part of the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail that runs from Torrance County Beach to Pacific Palisades. On event weekends the bike ride from Riviera Village or from north Manhattan is faster than driving into downtown Hermosa.
• Use the Community Theatre for the off-nights. The Hermosa Beach Community Theatre is a 502-seat venue that hosts youth musical theatre, film premieres, and dance productions. Programming skews toward the shoulder nights of the week, which is exactly when Pier Plaza is easiest.
• The 100,000-visitor number is real. Hermosa has roughly two miles of sand and an average summer weekend can bring more than 100,000 people down to the beach. That is roughly five times the city's resident population landing between 4th Street and Herondo on a Saturday. Plan errands before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m.

Why this matters beyond dinner reservations

Three restaurant openings on one block is a data point. A Michelin Bib Gourmand a few doors down is a second. A tournament, a triathlon, and a concert series stacked into one week is a third. Taken together they describe a Pier Avenue that has stopped competing with Manhattan Beach's downtown on ambiance and started competing on the actual quality of the room.

For a homeowner already living here, the practical takeaway is small and useful: your walking radius just got more interesting, your Friday reservation window just got tighter, and the block you have used for fifteen years to grab a beer after a paddle is now hosting rooms you would take a visiting parent to.

The bigger takeaway is one you do not need to act on today. Blocks that attract chef-owner operators tend to hold their character longer than blocks built on rotating tenants.
